Compassionate Pedagogy

VIDEO LIBRARY OF SCHOLARLY SNAPSHOTS

A great tragedy in academia is that so much wisdom is tucked away in journal articles that most of us never encounter. Below you will find concise video summaries of some inspiring work, distilled into tangible takeaways that can transform your teaching.

STUDENT CENTERED PEDAGOGY

Spiritual Pedagogy is first and foremost student centered. This video summarizes the work of Lindholm and Astin where they explain and defend this concept,  published in 2008  in The Review of Higher Education.

 PEDAGOGY OF CHANGE

Sustainability Pedagogy refers essentially to a Pedagogy of Change -- trying a new approach to gain a different outcome. This video provides an overview of Heather L. Burns' article, "Transformative Sustainability Pedagogy," published in the Journal of Transformative Education in May, 2015.

PEDAGOGY OF FRIENDSHIP

Christian Pedagogy invites us to apply a pedagogy of friendship to our classrooms, reading our classrooms like icons. This video provides an overview of  Noel Forlini Burt's article "I Have Called You Friends," published in the Journal of Formation and Soul Care in 2020.

PEDAGOGY OF COURAGE

This video provides a summary of Julita Orzelska's article applying the philosophy of Paul Tillich to pedagogy. Orzelska emphasizes the importance of individuality and self-expression in education, pushing back against the pressure to conform to society's expectations and accepted norms.

VALUES DRIVEN PEDAGOGY

Spiritual Pedagogy is values-driven. In this video, we'll look at the values that drive spiritual pedagogy and identify the traits as they show up in the classroom.  Insights are taken from Syihabuddin's 2017 article published in the International Journal of Education.

PEDAGOGY OF CONTEMPLATION

Contemplative Pedagogy is not only about mindfulness. It also argues for putting  the "I" back in academia, seeing the learner as an active participant in what is learned. This video provides a summary of Anita Houck's 2019 article  “Contemplative Pedagogy: Experiments and Reflections,” published in Horizons.

PEDAGOGY OF NURTURE

Islamic Pedagogy is a pedagogy of nurture, rooted in the three Islamic values of care for the self, the earth, and the other. This video provides a summary of Abdullah Sahin's 2017 article, "Education as Compassionate Transformation: The Ethical Heart of Islamic Pedagogy."

PEDAGOGY OF SAFETY

This video summarizes the work of Stephanie Crumpton on Trauma Sensitive Pedagogy. It seeks to provide teachers with several concrete steps they can take to make their classrooms safer places for the growing number of students who have a history with trauma.
